Meet L & M! They’re getting hitched in July and I’m the lucky one that gets to document it! These two are super great and I’m so excited to be their photographer:) With any photography assignment my goal is to define through pictures who they are together, but in an authentic way. I want to photograph who L & M are as a couple and preserve who what defines them right now. LIfestyle photography’s purpose is to not only to remember how we looked, but how we loved. One of the greatest compliments I receive is when someone says that I captured the essence of a family or couple. Relationships grow and mature and their lives will look different in years to come so I wanted to capture who they are now. The images below are a result of their love, laughter, and delight with each other:)
Like all great love stories they have a beginning:) L & M’s began here:

They ? comics so where else to go for their eSession?

Beloved is defined by the official Beloved website as: A beloved portrait session is not just a photo shoot, it’s a celebration of love and genuine communications. These images serve as a doorway to bring two people back to the beginning of their journey together. We invite couples to share a piece of themselves and capture valuable moments through the art of photography.
A celebration of love and genuine communication. This is what I strive for in all my sessions, but especially in a beloved session. When a couple and/or family invests in a beloved session, I hope it’s more than just a session, but an opportunity to slow life down and reconnect. I am busy, you are busy, life is busy, but in the midst of our busyness we still need to slow down and enjoy the most important things beginning with our families.
Joey and Rachel decided to do just that. They have been married three years and this is the first time they’ve had professional pictures taken together. They are an amazing couple and we had so much fun together! Well, they had fun and I was blessed to tag along:) Thank you, J&R for allowing me to serve you through photography. You are so much fun, I hope you enjoy your sneak peek!

On a personal note, I will be leaving for my own belovedness with my hubs tomorrow. I will be out of the office celebrating 10 years for the whole week! We will be having a beloved session of our own with the fabulous Kathy Ray. I will be answering emails and calls when I get back:)

Meet Calvin:

Calvin is an avid basketball player at Horizon HS. He’s also into Christian Hip Hop- his favorite artist is Lecrae and you can check out his amazing story here. He recently started taking a class involving cars and has found he really likes it. Which if he’s any kind of driver like I was, will come in handy. Ha! Here’s a few more from his session. Enjoy your sneak peek, Calvin- I had a blast!

Favorite drink: Starbucks Iced Chai

Meet the P family! I met Leo sometime in early 2010 at a breakfast with some local photographers. (See past blog about the two kinds of photographers I’ve met along my journey:) Leo is definitely in the second group. He is a talented photographer and I was honored to take pictures of him and his beautiful wife and totally rad son! We headed to City Park (fave) and took a three seater bicycle out for a spin! Well they spun, I clicked and hitchhiked:) It made for some great family moments! Thanks P family! Enjoy your sneak peek!

Thank you, P family!

That’s quite a title, huh?
My mom and dad came for a visit recently and we decided to take Ryan out of school (shh, don’t tell the authorities that we value family time). We wanted to go on an outdoor adventure and chose the windiest day all year to do it. So even though the car said 50ish degrees it felt much colder. Our adventure took place in Golden, CO. My mom and I are big fans of historic towns and I’ve driven by Golden a few times, but never explored it on foot. It is beautiful and I must say it had a gorgeous tattoo parlor: Faith Tattoo Gallery. I’ve got to say that I’d set up a studio right inside, this place was gorgeous. For those of you that are wondering, I’m not planning on getting a tattoo, but I did recently pierce my nose and as a newbie to the whole nose-pierced world I had some questions. Unfortunately they don’t do piercings, but the man was super friendly, had two cute chihuahuas (as cute as chihuahuas can be anyway), and like I previously mentioned a beautiful tattoo gallery. So aside from the great second-hand shops-for which I will have to return, because 3 boys in tow does NOT make for a pleasant shopping experience, our adventure ended shortly because of this crazy cold wind.
On our way home (actually we were on our way to McDonald’s because after all we promised the boys an adventure, and let’s face it sometimes eating off Ronald’s menu can be an adventure) we saw a sign to the Colorado Railroad Museum. One thing you should know about me is that I am NOT a museum kind of gal. I can handle the occasional museum from time to time, but given the limited time we have on this earth, it’s not a place I choose to frequent. But it did say “railroad” and my dad and my boys are huge train fans. My parents did the usual should we go, should we not go, but a decision needed to be made so I may have crossed over two lanes a little more quickly than needed to make the exit and we arrived. It was AWESOME! There were trains everywhere and many you could go into and explore. The boys, my dad included, were wild with excitement. And because I can’t compartmentalize I got to thinkin’, “This place would be awesome for a photoshoot!” I thought I’d share some pictures that I took to give you an idea of how cool this place is. These were taken with my point and shoot and like my Disney pictures, I think it does pretty good:)

He was like a kid in a candy shop.

My dad is a museum kind of guy:)

So I’ve been thinking of doing a mini-session Saturday out in Golden at the Colorado Train Museum. I’m still thinking on some things and would like your input. The session would include 5×7′s or 8×10′s, mini-accordion album or 5×5 album, DVD slideshow… what do you think? I’d love your input. If you’re interested in a mini-session at the Train Museum, shoot me an email or give me a call 720.333.9011. Also, I’d love to hear from you, so leave me a comment!
Choo-choo!

WPPI yet again was an amazing experience. Last year was the first year I attended and as soon as I went to my first class, I wanted to rush home and implement everything I had just learned-so many things I wanted/needed to change. This year was the same… and completely different at the same time. I went to all new speakers, including:
Mike Larson – a surfer and rockstar photographer reminding me to listen to my clients, be real, and be there for my family! Thank you, Mike, for that reminder!
Sarah Petty – wow-did she rock my small business world! I can’t wait to apply everything I learned in her class and, yes, my hand hurt after all the note taking:)
Jesh de Rox – said, “If you want to make work that moves people, you have to be moved while making it…” A sweet reminder that lifestyle photography does move me and I LOVE what I do!
Suzette Allen – showed me some really cool tricks in CS5-”Thank you!” from future Kaela and the time you saved her:)
JP Elario – was so fun! He’s down-to-earth and knows pretty much everything about viral marketing.
Louis Pang – one word: sick. I don’t know if I can pull that word off, but his style is amazing! And it was fun to get inside his mind and see how he executes what he envisions!
Me Ra Koh – was my last class and my favorite!’
Me Ra is amazing! I almost didn’t go to her class, but I’m so happy I did! I know that sounds cliche, but sometimes cliches are truth:) There were several times during her talk that I wanted to jump and shout-”That’s me!” I’m glad I didn’t, and I’m sure she would be too, but I connected so strongly with what she was saying that it was really hard not to:)
Me Ra shoots collections of stories instead of pictures. That is so lifestyle photography- telling your family’s story through photographs. She gave us insight on how she tells her clients’ stories. She shared an imperfect picture with us- a picture that wouldn’t win an award and it’s possible it could even receive criticism, but she shared it with us. And the story she shared with the picture made me cry. A mom like any other mom that believes she’s not a good mom, that she’s too busy, but through the gift of lifestyle photography she proved to this mom that she is a good mom and she’s the world to her daughter. A genuine moment happened between mother and daughter. They were playing tickle-monster of some sort, and Me Ra had to decide what’s more important: technical excellence or capturing the emotion? For awhile I chose technical excellence. If it wasn’t perfectly sharp or exposed, I’d dump the picture. Then I started thinking like a mom, “If this was my moment with my child, would I want this picture?” That’s when my business motto changed, or more specifically my heart-you can read about it here.
This is the picture that I carried around on my bag to each class and through the trade show.

I have to admit that I was a bit embarrassed, but only at first. Among all these rockstar photogs, they have to be thinking-that’s the best she’s got? That’s the picture she puts on the bag?? But if they knew the story behind the picture they’d understand. And then I didn’t care, lifestyle photography isn’t perfect, it’s life through pictures, and sometimes life is a little messy-especially if you have three boys like I do;)
She gave me freedom. Freedom from perfection, freedom from knowing exactly what I plan to shoot-not even having a plan! Freedom to be creative and freedom to shoot like a woman!
Thank you, Me Ra, for sharing your story, heart, and passion with me through your platform class!

I first heard about the Beloved Movement at WPPI 2010. It was started by a photographer named Jesh De Rox. Although I missed his class (insert sob), I heard about it from everyone, and I mean everyone. Literally, everywhere I went after his class people were talking about this new movement simply called, Beloved. There was such a buzz about this Beloved Movement that I had to hear the whole story. I found an online link that allowed me to listen to his class and I was again so bummed I didn’t see his class in person. But even listening to it online gave me chills.
What a concept-what a perfect fit to the type of photography I aspire to capture.
As a lifestyle photographer, I try to educate people about this unique genre of photography. It’s not a picture or a snapshot. It’s not about what to wear or where it should take place. Of course, when you’re spending a chunk of change on photography- because let’s face it, professional photography is an investment- you want to have a nice location and have cute, colorful outfits for the kids. But it’s so much more than the color of the leaves and whether or not you have a good hair day! Lifestyle photography is about documenting life. Not only what you looked like, but how you loved. That smile your two year old makes when you tickle him. The way your daughter looks at you when you’re not looking. The way your beloved looks at you when remembering the day he wanted to spend the rest of his life loving only you. That is what lifestyle sessions capture. It’s not a location that makes a photograph beautiful, it’s the family, the love, the connection.
Beloved Sessions are genuine moments between a husband and a wife-not twisted poses that make you feel unnatural. They are a celebration of new love and of old love.
